Dear
Skaters:
After being a teacher myself and
observing others I realized not all teachers can teach. Some are
stricty in it for the money while others may not even be qualified!
Just passing tests and getting medals
does not make you a teacher. Some skaters can teach, some can't.
Some of the best instructors
I have ever seen stood on the ice, and taught without their skates
on! Their eyes, ears and knowledge
were their tools.
A big part of teaching is LOVING what
you do. Teaching correctly and having your student understand the
proper technique is crucial. How can someone teach you something
if he has no idea how to do it himself?
The teacher doesn't have to perform the move but he/she should understand
the mechanics to teach it
correctly. The key part is that learning incorrectly from someone
who claims to be a pro can cause
irreversible "bad habits" and also lead to injury!
I felt in my own way I needed to do something about stopping the
"Bad Pro."
With that in mind, I started SkatingLessons.com.
We are listing only professionals with skating and
insurance credentials. It is impossible for SkatingLessons.com
to check on the trueness and the current
status of the information gathered on each professional listed,
but all the information provided can be
checked out before you hire them. On the Links
Page I have "hot" links to all the organizations pros
belong to. A quick call to any organization
will help you identify a member in good standing.
Good luck and happy skating.

About the Owner:
Pete Beatty, owner of both SkatingLessons.com and Skateworks, LLC,
has been teaching on and
off the ice for over 20 years. Starting as a young man in the Ice Capades, he has never lost his love
of skating. Up until he started in the Internet business in 1998
he was working in Connecticut as a
skating director for both an ice rink and an aggressive skate park.
Pete also was for a few years the
events director for the Rollerblade distributor in the New York
area. Some of his Rollerblade NYX team
can still be seen doing their extreme stunts for the Ringling Brothers. He now divides his time
between running his Internet business and teaching--the best of
both worlds!
